Why should we participate?:: All of the proceeds will be used to benefit the FLL tournaments in the Northern California area! This is the only T-shirt that you can buy where the proceeds go to help the local FLL program.
Guidelines:: Try to keep a idea with big bold features. Try to keep the number of different colors used relatively small. Don't worry about putting the design on a T-shirt "model" - we will handle that - just submit the design itself.

Final Local Competition: Newark High School

Hey All.

I had the pleasure of being a Project Judge this past weekend at Newark High School for the Final Local Competition for Smart Move. Here are the final results.

It was totally awesome. I saw tons of amazing project ideas, amazing presentations, and incredible models.

I didn't get to see any of the robot games, but I did learn that the highest possible score for the Smart Move Challenge is 400. Which blows our high of 190 out of the water.

Hopefully, next year, we can have our own amazing Lego Team WVMS. Let us strive!

The #1 Champion from this weekend are invited to the World Festival in Atlanta, Georgia in April.

Design Your Own Obstacle Course and Robot Requirements

Part 1: With your teammate, design an obstacle course for a robot. Type the description of your obstacle course using Microsoft Word. In the description you must have point values for each mission/directive. Be sure to determine the highest possible score if all missions/directives are completed without any penalties. You must also determine penalty values. Use the NXT Program to help you determine what to have the robot do as a part of your obstacle course.

Requirements:
There must be at least 6 distinct missions or directives. (Each mission can have more than one requirement in them. Example: Stop, make a noise, and display some image could be one mission).
There must be at least two possible penalties. Determine what they are and be very clear when describing them. (Example: can’t touch bridge (-5 points).
The missions/directives cannot use more sensors/ports then there are ports available on the control brick. (2 motors and 4 sensors, 1 motor and 5 sensors, etc.)
Use specific locations on the mat in your missions. (Example: Stop on the circular target and blink 3 times).
Be sure to say if the missions must be performed in a certain order or not. (Example: Complete the missions in order as stated, if they are not completed in order then there will be a 10 point penalty. Example: You may complete the missions in any order you please.)

Part 2: Determine the requirements for the robot based on the obstacle course. Write a description or list of what a group would need to know to build a robot that would be able to complete the obstacle course you created. Here are some questions to ask your self about the course to determine what the robot needs:

Does the robot have to fit under the bridge at any point during your obstacle course? (Is there a height requirement?).
Does the robot have to blink? (Does it need a lamp?)
Does it need to stop a certain distance from any object? (Does it need an ultrasonic sensor?)
Does the robot need to detect any color or objects on the mat? (Does it need a light sensor?)
Does the robot have to negotiate the bridge? (Go up and go down? What does the robot need to do this?)

Requirements:
The robot cannot be altered in the middle of completing an obstacle course.

Example of what you need to do for Part 2:
The robot must be no more than 10 inches tall to clear the bridge.
The robot must be able to overcome obstacles at least 1 inch high.
The robot must have a lamp, light sensor, ultrasonic sensor, and 3 motors.

New Rules:

You may not have anyone rip up the bridge (no godzillas!).

If you have the robot exit the table you can only have them do so by going up and over the bridge. Also, once the robot has left the table that has to be the end of the scoring period. They are not able to return the robot to the table to complete more obstacles.

Submit your obstacle course two ways: 1) a printed (hard) copy. 2) make a comment to this post and copy your typed (word) document into the comment field and make a comment.

FIRST Students in Bus Accident in CT: 1 Dead; 17 others injured

Statement from Paul R. Gudonis, President of FIRST®

It is with deep sadness that I report that one FIRST student has apparently died and 17 others were injured when a school bus carrying a group from a Hartford magnet school collided Saturday morning with another vehicle on Interstate 84 in Hartford, Conn. The school bus was evidently carrying students from the Greater Hartford Academy of Mathematics and Science to Farmington High School to attend a local FIRST Robotics Competition Kickoff event at Farmington High School. The team, #3125, is a Rookie FRC team.

Our hearts and the hearts of the entire FIRST community go out to the victims of this terrible accident and those of their families during this very difficult time. FIRST is currently assessing the situation and how best we can support the most immediate needs of our students, their families, parents, coaches and peers involved in this tragedy. The name of the student as well as the names of those injured in the accident have been withheld pending notification of families.

I know you join me in expressing our condolences for this unfortunate set of circumstances. We will post future information on Bill’s Blog.

Last Local Tournament of the Season!

Come see the last local tournament of the season. WVMS won't be competing, but it is an excellent time to watch top-notch teams compete. (You might see a former class mate there who has made it to the last match!). I will be there as a guest judge for the Project section.

The games will (probably) be going on from 9am until 5pm at Newark High School, January 16th:

Quarter 3/4 2010 Lego Robotics Class

Lego Robotics Quarter 3 and 4 for the 2009/2010 academic year will be different from Quarter 1 and 2.

The new quarter will be using this classroom based software to assist students in understanding engineering in the real world.

To multiply a sum or difference, multiply each number within the parentheses by the number outside the parentheses.

Always distribute the number outside of the parentheses!

a(b + c) = ab + ac
(b + c)a = ba + ca
a(b – c) = ab – ac
(b – c)a = ba - ca

To make some multiplication problems easier, try doing the Distributive Property Backwards. Here we added two numbers to get 102. Don’t forget that you can subtract too!
20(102) = ?
= 20(100 + 2) ~100+2=102,Break 102 into two parts.
= 20(100) + 20(2) ~ Distribute the 20.
= 2,000 + 40 ~ PEMDAS, Multiplication.
= 2,040 ~ PEMDAS, Addition.
20(102) = 2,040

Find the product of 9 and 199.
9(199) =
= 9(200 – 1) ~ 200 – 1 = 199
= 9(200) – 9(1) ~ Distribute the 9.
= 1,800 – 9 ~ PEMDAS, Multiplication.
= 1,791 ~ PEMDAS, Subtraction.
9(199) = 1,791

12(52) – 12(62) =
= 12(52 – 62) ~ Pull out 12 and combine the 52 – 62
= 12(-10) ~ PEMDAS, Simplify in the parentheses
12(52) – 12(62) = -120 ~ PEMDAS, Multiply.

Distributive Property with Variables
-5(4x – 3) =
= -5(4x) – (-5)(3) ~ Distribute –5
= -20x – (-15) ~ PEMDAS, Multiply.
= -20x + (+15) ~ Add the Opposite.
= -20x + 15 ~ Simplify, this is your answer!

#7: Pages 42-43: 1-13 all, but #9 is extra credit, so try it.
If you're struggling, try and set up the pattern like you saw it on last nights homework.

For the first problem: Caroline swam 1 lap every day for the first week. 3 laps every day for the second week. 6 laps every day for the third week. 10 laps every day for the fourth week. Determine how many laps a week she swims during the 8th week.
Turn it into this type of pattern: 1, 3, 6, 10.... Figure out the pattern between those four numbers and then continue the pattern until the 8th week.
1 + 2 = 3, 3 + 3 = 6, 6 + 4 = 10, 10 + 5 =.......

Also, try making a diagram like we did with the Riverdell High School problem. Write any information that is important!

Remember, to get full credit on each problem you must attempt each problem!!! Even if you can't figure out how to do it, write down any information that is important to the problem.

Once you have completed the in class warm up (Graphing), go to this website: Reading Charts & Graph Quiz.
Click "Start Now".
Look at each chart or graph and answer the questions about them.
There will be 4 different models used to describe each set of data. (For Example, the first model is a chart).
On the back of your warm up sheet:
1) Name each model type.
2) Name the two types of data being compared in each model. (These may be a little difficult, so ask for help if you need it).

Once you have finished the 25 problems and written down the information about the 4 types of models, please turn in your warm up to Ms. D-H. Chapter 7 Flow Chart In Class Assignment

Ms. Dewey-Hoffman’s Chapter 7 Review Flow Chart

UPDATE: I only received 4 assignments by the end of Friday. You have until Tuesday to turn in your flow charts with 5 completed example problems.

Using Microsoft Word, create a flow chart using these phrases. Join the phrases that go together to represent the material we have learned about in Chapter 7.

Put your full name at the top of the Word document and when you are finished, print the document to the office, then go get it.

Once you get your print out, look through the book or examples from the power points and come up with an example problem for at least 5 bubbles. Once you have found 5 problems, you must then solve them/come up with an answer to them/graph their outcome.

You will be graded on neatness and how complete your flow chart is. So make your flow chart nice. If you use color, make sure that when it is printed in black and white from the printer that I can still read each phrase.

Turn in the assignment once you're done.

The phrases below are the ones you need to chart.

Chapter 7: Solving Equations and Inequalities

To Solve: Get variables on one side and coefficients & constants on the other.

To Solve: Undo what is happening to the variable using SADMEP.

There was no power point from today's lesson do to the possibility that the power could be out still.

The main points from today's lesson:

1) Treat an inequality with variables in it like you would solving a regular equation. JUST REMEMBER THAT IT IS AN INEQUALITY, NOT AN EQUATION.

2) The moment you multiply or divide an inequality by a negative number, remember to FLIP or REVERSE the direction of the inequality symbol.

Today's homework does not involve graphing at all. If you do graph, remember to use an elevated arrow above the number like. (What Mrs. Tate had you do, NOT the way I taught earlier).
Today's homework was started in class and the first two problems needed to be finished before leaving class.
Assignment #57: Pages 362-363: 17-28 all, and 32-35 all.
